Dearest Reader… We Believe It Is Time We Had a Conversation - It’s time for a new chapter from Irwin & Dow

Dearest Reader,
There comes a moment in every good society when someone simply must say what everyone else is thinking. After years of polished corporate statements, overly rehearsed recruitment jargon, and enough “dynamic fast-paced opportunities” to last several lifetimes, we at Irwin & Dow have decided it may finally be time for something a little more honest.
A little more current. And dare we say… a little more entertaining. And so… here we are.
Welcome to our new blog era.
Out with the old. In with the refreshingly real.
The UAE recruitment market has changed dramatically over the past few years—and so too have the conversations surrounding it.
Candidates are exhausted by applying into silence. Employers are frustrated by talent shortages, shifting expectations, and endless interview rounds. Recruiters, somewhere in the middle, are navigating a market moving faster than ever before while attempting to keep everyone informed, aligned, and occasionally sane.
And yet, despite all this change, much of the industry continues to speak in the same tired language.
Not here.
This space is for the conversations people are having behind closed boardroom doors, after interviews, over coffees, and in those frantic voice notes sent between recruiters trying to save everyone’s schedules. The truths no one quite says aloud. Until now.
What can you expect from us?
A touch of wit. A healthy amount of honesty. And insights grounded firmly in the realities of the UAE market.
One can scarcely move across LinkedIn without encountering the same declarations of “exciting opportunities,” “fast-paced environments,” and “competitive packages,” all delivered with such alarming seriousness that one begins to suspect nobody is enjoying themselves at all. And yet behind the polished announcements, perfectly curated profiles, and carefully rehearsed interviews lies a far more fascinating reality.
Candidates are overwhelmed. Employers are impatient. Recruiters are juggling impossible timelines, vanishing applicants, delayed feedback, and salary negotiations delicate enough to rival royal diplomacy.
In short, dear reader… the market has become decidedly chaotic. And so, at Irwin & Dow, we have decided it is finally time to discuss it properly.
A new season is upon us - Out with the tired corporate formalities. Out with the painfully vague job advertisements and rehearsed interview advice from another era. And decidedly in with candour, wit, and conversations that actually reflect the realities of hiring in the UAE today.
For this shall not be a blog of stale business commentary. Oh no. This shall be a chronicle of modern recruitment society itself. The triumphs. The frustrations. The ghosting. The impossible wish lists. The candidates applying for seventeen roles simultaneously whilst claiming to seek “focus.” The employers demanding urgency whilst vanishing for three weeks without explanation.
One sees everything in recruitment, dear reader. And truly, it would be selfish not to share it.
What may one expect from these pages?
Observations from the frontlines of the UAE market. Guidance for candidates attempting to navigate increasingly competitive processes. Gentle encouragement for employers who may have forgotten the importance of communication. And, on occasion, the sort of honest truths that rarely make their way into boardroom presentations.
We shall discuss:
- The art of interviewing well.
- The curious epidemic of candidate and client ghosting.
- Why updating one’s CV every fortnight is entirely unnecessary.
- Why applying for every vacancy, one sees is not, in fact, a strategy.
- Why communication remains the rarest luxury in modern hiring.
- Why LinkedIn has become its own peculiar form of theatre.
- And why reputation—both corporate and personal—travels remarkably quickly in the Gulf.
All delivered, naturally, with the highest levels of discretion and confidentiality.
For candidates and clients alike, because recruitment, dear reader, is a relationship business. And relationships—whether professional or otherwise—rarely flourish without transparency.
Candidates deserve transparency, guidance, and respect.
Employers deserve commitment, professionalism, and honesty.
Recruiters, meanwhile, deserve at the very least a returned email and perhaps occasionally a full night’s sleep, because contrary to public opinion, we care.
The market itself?
Utterly transformed. Complex, competitive, and constantly evolving. The UAE remains one of the most exciting hiring markets globally, attracting ambitious professionals from every corner of the world. Yet with this comes heightened competition, evolving expectations, and increasingly selective hiring decisions. Artificial intelligence now reviews CVs before human eyes ever glance upon them. Hiring processes stretch across multiple interview stages. Salary expectations rise whilst patience declines. Everyone seeks perfection whilst hoping to secure it immediately.
A note to our candidates
We see you. The endless applications. The interview preparation. The waiting. Lack of significant feedback. The uncertainty. The pressure to appear endlessly enthusiastic while navigating an increasingly demanding market.
And to our clients…
We see you too. The balancing of budgets, business needs, leadership expectations, and impossible wish lists somehow requiring a multilingual unicorn with ten years’ UAE experience and a notice period of yesterday.
This market is nuanced. Hiring well takes strategy, decisiveness, and communication. It is exhausting for everyone!
Why now, you ask?
Because the old way of talking about recruitment no longer reflects the reality of the market. And because business content does not need to be painfully dull to be credible.
At Irwin & Dow, we have spent years building relationships across the UAE and wider region—supporting candidates through career-defining moves and partnering with clients shaping extraordinary businesses. After years of observing the triumphs and peculiarities of Gulf hiring culture, we at Irwin & Dow want you to be part of the conversation.
Consider this your formal introduction to a rather different kind of recruitment blog. One with insight. Personality. Market truths. And perhaps the occasional raised eyebrow at modern hiring behaviour.
The market is evolving. The conversations are changing. The most interesting discussions are rarely the ones happening publicly.
And quite frankly… We think it is time someone started saying the quiet parts out loud.
