Use of Social Media - Be Smart

This has been an issue for a lot of employers and employees since the use of social media has continued to increase. When you apply for a role, a company will know your name, and more than likely will go onto the internet and find you on social media, which can have a direct impact on your success within the interview process.

We like to ensure that all of our candidates are aware of this and keep themselves safe, but in case you were not sure, here are a few things to keep in mind when posting your next picture!

Make your profile private!

This is the number one rule. If you think that your social media profile could be considered inappropriate (read through the rest of this before making this decision), or even if you don’t, it is always best to make your profile private to those who you are not connected with.

Your private life is exactly that – private.

Although we all like to share our interests and accomplishments with those around us, your private life is exactly that, private. Employers and your colleagues probably do not want to know about your holidays, the latest thing your pet did, or the last night out you had. Try and remember that what you post will always be out there and can never be taken back.

NEVER post anything that could be considered sultry/inappropriate

We’ve all been there. You feel really good in an outfit, or someone has taken a picture whilst you were on the beach that you like, chances are you are going to want to share it with as many people as possible. Living in Dubai specifically, we understand that you are going to want to share how much you are enjoying your weekends in the sand, or the night life, but ensure you keep it appropriate for general viewing.

Be careful when it comes to cultural/religious norms

For example, if you are in a Muslim country, as we are here, be respectful of the culture always. Please ensure you are dressed appropriately in any pictures you do post and that no one could take offence in any way from them. Be aware of what could be considered in a negative way.

Swearing, profanities or other inappropriate words

This on a whole is not a good thing to do, no matter where in the world you are. There is just no need for it. You might be angry and want to use your social platforms to vent or as a discussion point about something specific, but this can be highly detrimental, when potential employers are looking at your profile. Be aware again of the social media rules in the country you are seeking work; the Middle East especially has strong views and there can be considerable fines for inappropriate content.

Your social media is a direct representation of you. What you chose to do in your free time and how you chose to live your life is up to you, but you HAVE to remember that it’s not only open to those who you know and who you socialise with, but to all future and past employers, as well as governments world-wide. Stay safe, make it private, and only allow those closest to you to share your private life.

Remember, once something is on the internet, it is always there to be found, if you search hard enough.
